About

Mind! was on every Wednesday at The Dogstar in Brixton from 10pm til 2am.  Sadly, The Dogsstar’s management decided to call it a day after our last gig on Wednesday 12 November 2008.

Mind! may reappear at another venue some time in 2009.

Earl Gateshead (Trojan Sound System) and Unity Selekta play roots, reggae, dancehall, drum and bass, dubstep and breakbeat.

Earl Gateshead [dj/selector]
(Trojan Sound System)

Earl was born on Tyneside. He played Music. He’s still playing Music…

Earl came to London from Newcastle in 1977 and soon began to DJ at the Old Queen’s Head in Brixton. He built a a sound system and installed it at The Dive Bar in Soho’s Chinatown, London. The night became legendary as Earl began a 20 year residency in the dark underground venue.

As Earl’s reputation grew residencies followed at the famous Blue Note club in Hoxton and at Plastic People, where he worked with Big Youth, Dennis Alcapone, Adrian Sherwood and Bobby Digital amongst others.

Spells followed in which he toured as Big Youth’s and Doctor Alimantado’s DJ. He formed Roots and Reality Sound with Daddy Ad and, as links with the world’s greatest reggae label, Trojan Records, had become strong, the Sound gradually metamorphised into Trojan Sound System, for whom he remains selector.

Unity Selekta [dj/selector]

subpixel [vj/projector]

subpixel is a video artist / VJ / visualist from Sydney. He is currently living in London and tripping about Europe.

subpixel is also a programmer, part-time loungeroom philosopher, and generally all-’round nice guy.

For a long time I’ve been interested in graphics and visuals. Since 2006 I’ve been supplying visuals for gigs, parties, and home entertainment, drawing on material I’d produced (both consciously and subconsciously) before even thinking I would be a ‘VJ’ – taking photos and little videos thinking they “might be interesting as visuals” – and new material from an ongoing development process with custom effects, video, graphics, animation, etc.

Much of the VJ material I’ve seen involves short loops, typically fast-paced, highly processed and/or computer generated video clips and animations. Something like a truck bearing down on you in a tunnel with multicoloured strobe lights and laser beams for headlights (I feel sorry for anyone with photosensitive epilepsy). Okay, maybe that’s a bit harsh, and these kind of visuals have their place, but they don’t really suit a lot of the music I like to listen to, so a lot of the visuals I make are more ‘organic’, have some sort of progression or journey, tidbits of real life, places, people… more of a dreamscape than a train smash.
